Simply stated, a health coach helps you achieve a healthy lifestyle tailored just for you. Since you know yourself better than anyone, a health coach will ask the right questions, motivate you, and hold you accountable so you can finally lose the weight and keep it off. It is an equal partnership with the goal of changing your health for the better.
Sports figures all have one thing in common: they got to the top of their game with the help of a coach. Is there anything more important than being at the top of your game with your health? A coach motivates, guides, supports and encourages you to be the best you can.
How to choose a health coach
You want a coach with expertise, experience, and, most importantly, someone who has been officially certified as a health coach. Unfortunately, since there are no state licensing requirements, anyone can claim to be a health coach. You also want someone who is a good listener and doesn’t impose their health agenda on you.
I believe everyone can change their health. I don’t care if you have a bad hip or knee, or you are 100 pounds overweight, or how many times you have tried and given up. Look at those experiences as learning opportunities on your path to finding out what does work for you. We all have “challenges” with our bodies so you work with what you have. I worked with one client who could not walk the few steps to her mailbox due to obesity and lung disease. We started with her taking only five steps a day. She lived by herself and always wanted a dog, but knew she would not be able to provide the care it would require. Together we worked on changing her diet and adding a few more steps everyday. The changes did not happen overnight, however, she eventually was able to get a small dog. She was thrilled and her entire outlook on life changed. She now gets daily exercise by walking the dog. The first step is always the hardest but once you commit, the benefits keep you going.
